Putting People at the Heart of Innovation

Putting People at the Heart of Innovation

MicroTex is not just a technological project – it’s a people-centred initiative. From day one, patients and members of the public will be central to shaping the direction, priorities, and delivery of the research. The goal is to ensure that the development of new tools and therapies reflects real-world needs and concerns, and that the benefits of innovation are felt by the communities who need them most. This means embedding Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) throughout the project -not as an add-on, but as a core part of how the Hub operates.

Genuine Collaboration, Not Just Consultation

The project’s approach to engagement is built on co-creation and co-delivery. Patients, carers, and members of the public will help define the research agenda, contribute to study design, shape the language and materials we use, and play an active role in evaluating technologies and outcomes. Through regular workshops, advisory panels, public events, and lab tours, we’ll create meaningful opportunities for people to participate—not only by providing feedback, but by becoming collaborators in the research process.

A structured three-stage model—Reveal, Involve, Embed—will guide this engagement. First, we’ll share the aspirations and values of the Hub. Then, we’ll invite public contributors to explore how they can get involved. Finally, we’ll work to embed their voices within our teams, activities, and decision-making processes.

Building a Diverse and Empowered Network

At the heart of our approach is the creation of a UK-wide PPIE Network for Microdosing, initially focused on people with lung and eye conditions—two of our priority areas. The network will aim to bring together individuals with lived experience to guide the research and help set standards for public involvement across the sector. We are committed to ensuring that this network is inclusive and representative, with a strong emphasis on equality, diversity, and accessibility.

Informed, Transparent, and Ongoing Dialogue

To make engagement a natural part of research culture, MicroTex will deliver a wide range of public-facing activities. These include patient-led events, educational workshops, science festivals, podcasts, and digital storytelling—all aimed at fostering an informed and critically engaged public. We’ll also co-develop plain-language summaries of research findings and actively share our progress through online platforms and community collaborations.

By working closely with patients and the public, MicroTex will ensure that its technologies are not only scientifically robust, but also socially acceptable, ethically sound, and aligned with the values and priorities of the people they are designed to help.
