We are proud to announce the official launch of the MicroTex Hub — a major new research programme involving The University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, and The University of Bath dedicated to pioneering new tools for experimental medicine.

Supported by £10.8 million in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the MicroTex Hub brings together researchers across chemistry, engineering, medicine, and the life sciences to develop cutting-edge technologies to deliver medicines and monitor their progress in minute areas of the body to help advance future therapies, with a particular emphasis on infections of the lungs.

Lung infections are among the world’s biggest killers, particularly affecting people with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and those who require intensive care. Existing treatments are often limited, especially as resistance to antibiotics continues to rise. Through the development of microtechnology-enabled tools, we aim to create targeted, effective therapies that can overcome these challenges.

Our work will focus not only on advancing the science but also on ensuring that new treatments reach patients quickly. Training the next generation of researchers will be a key part of the Hub’s mission, with dedicated PhD programmes and collaborative projects with industry and healthcare partners.

The MicroTex Hub represents an exciting opportunity to transform how lung infections are treated, and we look forward to the innovations ahead.
